Rocket fuel from water

on Wed Sep 20, 2017 12:41 pm
A satellite that will be carrying water as a source of feul will be launching soon by researchers at NASA. This satellite, CubeSat, will be size of a shoe-box and will orbit the moon while utilizing water as a source of feul. Water is a stable and common substance even in space so any concerns about it's safety have answered. As rockets are designed on propulsion system, they need to be lightweight and carry alot of energy in a small space, so that they can continue their many years journey in space. Packing of energy into small volume and mass is very risky as it can be disastrous in case of a small issue. Because of this putting any satellite with unstable fuel could be disaster for expenses and even Human life. In this case water is a way to resolve this issue as it is not used as a fuel but as an energy carrier. The water will be using electricity from solar panels to split into hydrogen and oxygen that will be further used as fuel. The chemistry of reaction is simple, water when react with electricity will give out hydrogen and oxygen. These two gases will then recombine ignite, this is highly exothermic reaction that will give energy to drive satellite forward, gaining speed or altering it's position. This reaction is known as Extra-terrestial electrolysis, and before it has been used in space to provide oxygen to manned space missions.

That is unique how water will be used as an energy carrier.

The process of hydrogen and oxygen combination in an electrolyte will leads to ignition that will be an exothermic reaction. An exothermic reaction gives out energy, this is the energy that will be used as a fuel.

I know water is abundant in space, however ion rockets may not be very powerful they are very reliable and last forever. In space there is no need for extreme power. The draw back is it takes longer to gain speed. The question that is needed to answer is where are you going how far is it. If it's far away a ion drive engine would be the best choice. You don't need to stop and refuel. A short distance a more powerful engine is needed. It really depends on the variables in choosing which engine to use.
