Scientists are now discovering after more than a decade, that the most energized cosmic rays are actually coming from outside of our Milky Way galaxy.

Researchers have yet to discover the origins, however they have been able to determine that the supercharged particles are not coming from the center of our galaxy.

“We don’t know of a mechanism that can accelerate particles up to the energies we observe,” Greg Snow, a professor of physics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and one of the collaborators on this research, tells The Verge.

They are still trying to explain what cause these particles to get so charged up but are paving the way for future research.
