Slow ageing, extend lifespan Empty Slow ageing, extend lifespan

Sun Sep 17, 2017 6:54 am
An important intervention has been discovered that can slow down ageing process, by the UCL biologists. During this study, the health of middle aged flies was improved in such a way that their ageing process was slowed down. This technique is believed to delay many age-related diseases in humans. It was found out that ageing is an effect of accumulation of mitrochondria in brain and muscle after they got damaged and couldn't be eliminated from the body. Mitrochondria is the power House of the cell but it undergoes damage with time, when the cell cannot accumulate mitrochondria then it becomes toxic and become associated with age related diseases.

Slow ageing, extend lifespan Empty Re: Slow ageing, extend lifespan

In another ageing experiment with flatworms, molecular biologists found that a certain gene caused early success in reproduction at the expense of long life.  By cutting our that gene using CRISPR the worms added 50% to their lifespans.

In yet another ageing experiment, telomeres, the short sequences at the end of genes, were found to be shorter in older animals an humans.  By restoring telomeres to youthful lengths, older mice were found to be as energetic and healthy as younger mice.

In yet another set of experiments, certain malignant (cancer) human cells were found to be immortal, and have been grown in labs for decades with no sign of degradation.  Yet the healthy, precancerous version of these cells had telomeres and were limited to about 25 cell divisions, corresponding to a maximum life span of 150 years.

Ageing is not a simple mechanism.  It appears to be an accumulation of accidental, neutral mutations that avoid the evolutionary selection process simply because they occur after the reproduction cycle.
